High Sensitivity Smoke Detection – HSSD

High Sensitivity Smoke Detection – HSSD
Fire Detection

High sensitivity smoke detection (HSSD) systems are a specialist fire alarm system that is extremely sensitive as to smoke particles. It works on the principle of a series of tubes in the roof of the building with holes in those tubes and air is sucked through those tubes down to the filters, down to the detector module, which then analyses those particles and can differentiate between smoke and dust.

Understanding High Sensitivity Smoke Detection (HSSD)

They are probably the most sensitive form of fire detection. They do come with a reasonable high cost of ownership, as they are quite expensive to install and the filters often need to be replaced, depending on the dust of the environment.  Where there is dust in the environment, we would always recommend a automatic or a manual blow through of the pipework on a regular basis, to ensure that dust does not accumulate on the filters, or the holes in the pipework.

HSSD systems are advanced fire detection systems designed to detect smoke at an early stage, providing timely warnings and helping to minimize the risk of fire damage.

Benefits High Sensitivity Smoke Detection (HSSD)

HSSD system serves a wide range of applications, including:

  • Early Fire Detection: High Bay warehousing, environments with extreme temperatures (e.g., cold stores), and areas with rapid air movement like air conditioning plenum chambers.
  • Asset Protection: Safeguarding electrical switchgear and servers by providing early detection right at the point of risk. Fire risks can be detected at a very early stage of component failure, before damage is compounded by a developing fire. Early shutdown of the equipment at this point helps to mitigate any potential damage risks.
  • Combined with Automatic Fire Suppression: Integrating with automatic fire suppression systems for enhanced asset protection.

Frequently Asked Questions ?

High sensitivity smoke detectors use advanced technologies such as photoelectric, ionization, or air-sampling methods to detect even small particles of smoke. Air-sampling detectors draw in air samples to analyse for the presence of smoke particles.

High sensitivity smoke detectors are capable of detecting minute amounts of smoke particles, often well before a standard smoke detector would trigger an alarm. This early detection is crucial for preventing the spread of fires.

Early detection of smoke allows for quick response and intervention, reducing the risk of property damage, injuries, and loss of life. High sensitivity systems are also less prone to false alarms.

These detectors are often used in critical environments such as data centres, museums, server rooms, laboratories, and other facilities where early detection is crucial to prevent damage to sensitive equipment and artifacts.

High sensitivity detectors are designed to differentiate between real threats and false alarms. They may use advanced algorithms, multiple sensors, or dual sensing technologies to reduce the likelihood of false alarms.

Regular maintenance is crucial to ensure the proper functioning of high sensitivity smoke detectors. This may include periodic testing, cleaning, and calibration. Some systems also provide self-diagnostic features.

Yes, there are industry standards that govern the design, installation, and maintenance of high sensitivity smoke detection systems. Compliance with these standards helps ensure the effectiveness and reliability of the systems.

Yes, many high sensitivity smoke detection systems are designed to be integrated with other building management and fire protection systems, allowing for centralized monitoring and control.

High sensitivity systems are known for their fast response times. They can detect smoke in its early stages, providing an early warning to occupants and allowing for a quicker response from emergency personnel.

High sensitivity smoke detectors can be sensitive to environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, and air quality. It’s essential to consider these factors during the design and installation of the system to ensure optimal performance.
